Bergama--Pergamum was the capital of the extensive kingdom of Anatolia created after the death of Alexander the Great. The city’s strategic importance is clear from the size and scope of its ruins on its citadel which overlooks the modern city of Bergama. The citadel is dominated by the white marble Roman Temple of Trajan built in the second century CE. Famous for its library and for the invention of pergamen, latin for parchment, Pergamum also has one of the largest classical Greek theatres in Anatolia. The kingdom of Pergamum eventually was absorbed into the Roman province of Asia.

Pergamum was home to a major healing centre in the Roman Empire. The Asklepion was the hospital of Galen and offers fascinating insights into the medical world of the classical era.
